Proposal for 2008: On Guests

Hi dear tups,

The happy advent of Amber and Josh for tupper next week, which will be great, brings up something I've been wanting to check in with everyone about, which is the question of bringing guests to tupper supper.

Now that we are sharing the cooking and hosting around a bit more mindfully, it seems to me like we might want to have a Code -- well, more of a guideline -- for bringing guests to dinner.

(Basically, let us simply acknowledge that Alix's grace and hospitality allowed for bringing multiple surprise guests at the last second, but let us also honor the fact that, frankly, my head would totally explode if that happened on MY night to cook! )

Here's what I would like, as a cook myself:

-Please ask the cook's permission before inviting guests, ideally up to 2 days in advance, since some of us actually have trouble getting to the grocery store without copious advance planning;

and

-Please consider volunteering to cook or host or both if you are bringing a guest.

Does that make sense to everyone? Sorry if I'm being overcontrolling. You are free to vote me down, of course!

Love Jan

Dec 5 guest stars and Dec out of town dates

Hi all,

We will have Josh and Amber for tupper supper on December 5. I mean, they will join us. Possibly Andrew the Younger as well?

I think the cooking schedule coming up is as follows, but I'm not sure, so it would be great if Andy or Michelle could clarify who owns next week, especially with the many guests coming, etc.

Dec 5 Andy
Dec 12 Michelle
Dec 19 Craig
Dec 26 (Would be Alix, but she's out of town? Will anyone be here?)

Out of town dates that I know about are here:

Sally: 12/11-12/14 and 12/27-1/1.

Alix and Andy: 12/23 - ?

Supper at Sally's by Jan tonight

Hey friends,

I'll do some sort of pasta-based main course.

If someone could bring a salad, and someone could bring bread, it would be grand.

Thanks!

Minutes from 11-14-07 tup, plus info tidbit about next week

Tupper Supper swung into action last night with a phone call from Michelle, who was at Broadway and 83rd in balmy weather and in most excellent spirits, both about being in NYC, and about the prospect of leaving it!

The outsizedness of the place was touched upon, but the strange new Guiliani effect, where everyone is preternaturally friendly and nice, was also observed. The suggestion that one would be safer in downtown Manhattan than downtown Seattle was made, a strange sad thought indeed.

Next we filmed our Tribute to Hizzoner. Alix directed, Andy filmed, we all starred. We sat around empty plates and invited him to come cook for us, hinting that in a pinch that he could serve as dinner himself, we were that hungry. Loving and appreciative congratulations were sent his way. Woodstock will be a lesser place without our beloved tupper at the helm.

We tucked into Kathleen's scrumptious squash soup and creamy yogurt dish like wild dogs, also slurping up the jicama-laced salad provided by Craig with unseemly enthusiasm. GREAT dinner, all, thanks!

Alix related Oscar's latest visit to the ER, a story that culminated in Andrew's new plan to off the great American writers of our time to clear the decks for the bestsellerdom of his memoir, which he has just completed a fourth draft of. (Congrats on that fourth draft!)

The highlight of the evening was the return of our dear Craig, back from the valley of the flu. With an opening last Friday and news he'd be on the cover of Southwest Art next month, Craig appeared both pleased and startled, and perhaps one more sudden success away from bolting into a cave or other secured area. He spoke wildly of moving to Santa Fe -- but knows he will always be a tup, regardless of where he goes.

Other topics:
  • Scrum publishing, rugby, the New Zealand All Blacks and the French Cocks.
  • The Incredible Hulk, a green cocktail to be served at Friday's RHH Literary series event.
  • E-commerce solutions for non-profits, beta testing, and the difficulty of speaking to databases created in Exceed.
  • Lovableness of Seattle as compared to Santa Fe, France, and Italy.
  • Strong recommendations for the films The Darjeeling Limited and Across the Universe.
Supper closed with a delightful review of the The Fabulous Palm Spring Follies, which truly sounded like an inspiration for us all, featuring dancers in their 80s wearing 40 pounds of feathery vaudevillian headgear and doing the splits and so on; a brief discussion of the goodness of World Vision; and a general dismay about the growing scarcity of fresh drinkable water on our poor beleaguered planet. Sally pointed out that our President had purchased many acres of land in Paraguay, a place with the highest water table on the continent. It is a comfort to think that when he retreats into a heavily fortified fastness in the mountains to avoid being tried for war crimes, surrounded by Blackwater shock troops and a privatized mini-state of his own devising, he will be well-watered.

Tupper next week! At Sally's house. Jan cooks. Entree TBD. Please watch this space.

KA's Tupper Supper intentions for Wed, 11/14

Hi all,
I'm going to make a squash and pumpkin soup (with some guidance from Alice Waters) for tomorrow evening because it occurred to me this afternoon that Michelle won't have to eat it--she'll still be in New York! If you think this soup is a bad idea, tell me now because I'm setting to work on it in a few minutes. (I'll send e-mail to you all, too.)
Volunteers accepted for bread, salad, and wine. Or something else if you want.
K.

Tupper minutes from 11-07-07

First: Good thoughts for Oscar today, all. It's his last day on the Critical Watch List for bloat.

Last night's tupper took place at Sally's charming abode. It launched with Michelle's early arrival -- looking serene and beautiful and calm, like a woman who had NOT rushed to dinner straight from getting off work soothing distraught mentally ill people at 7pm.

Sally's new chair was much admired, Alix professed a distaste for Philip Glass, furniture was marshaled and organized. Conversation commenced with an overview of the sufferings of poor Oscar and Binti, and Alix noted that her trip to Italy had cost less than the dogs' weekend of intensive care.

Andy and special guest star Stephen Lamb arrived fresh from the airport just in time to sit down to a spectacularly delicious dinner of couscous, a yummy garbanzo-bean mixture topped with parsley and lemon, fresh green salad, olives stuffed with Gorgonzola, warm pita bread, and several bottles of reportedly excellent red wine.

Kathleen launched a discussion of a Christmas party, and those of us who can barely endure this season fell into despair, while others spoke in a lively manner of their engagements.

Andrew announced the return of the Demented Breakfast Cereal party, Feb 2, after a 6-year hiatus.

Alix noted that all tuppers are welcome at her place for thanksgiving.

Andy explained about Women of the Lost Mesa, which featured an 8ft in diameter man-eating spiders and spider women, and also Lash La Rou, who taught Harrison Ford how to wield a bullwhip, and noted that the author of these weird horror films moved to Tennessee, met Andy's grandfather, converted to Christianity and became the leading producer of Christsploitation horror films.

Ron Ormand, as he was named, became close friends with John R Rice, and indeed, the flaming pit of hell was filmed in Andy's childhood backyard. The film included a cameo by Jerry Falwell as himself, (not as the Devil, as per Alix's suggestion).

Kathleen breathed some salad and turned purple.

Another thing that happened in Andy's backyard was that his grandfather came and rode his horse around it. The horse was named General of the Armies Douglas MacArthur Jr and had to be addressed by his full name or not at all.

Break for free-for-all about various pet and object names of all tuppers. Jan had a boat called the Prince George of Denmark. I can't remember the others so please add them in the comments to ensure the accuracy of the record.

There was a brief discussion of Facebook and LinkedIn, with certain parties expressing dismay they'd never been invited to join these networks but a simultaneous resolve never to have anything to do with them.

Stephen noted that he was in town to hear pastor Rob Bell, of the Emergent Evangelical church, who does yoga from the pulpit in Michigan. Several fascinating-sounding books that discuss how people raised in the Christian right began to question and seek alternatives were mentioned. Anyone who wants to record their titles in comments would be most welcome!

The subject turned to how best to dismay and appall Stephen's family with piercings, the highlight of which was Sally's suggestion that he appear with a giant diaper clip appearing to be stuck thru his face, possibly with a little bear or other cuddly creature as the closing part.

Dinner came to a close when Andy fled the table after mention of a certain popular body modification that is too sensitive for mention in this forum. He was lead, rather like Oedipus by Antigone, from the house by young Stephen, covering his eyes, accompanied by the distant screaming of a monkey.

Kathleen will cook next week, dinner will be at Alix and Andy's -- we are promised a selection from Alice Waters's new cookbook. Yippee!

A Farewell to Hizzoner

Hey kids--next week at Tupper Supper, I would like to film (using Andrew's amazing digital camera's video capabilities) a short tribute to Jeremy, who will be leaving his position as Mayor of Woodstock at the end of this year. Fran is throwing a big surprise party for him on November 29th, and since none of us can be there in person, I thought it might be fun to send him a little video of the Tuppers wishing him well.

So think of what you'd like to tell Hizzoner, and be ready for your close-ups!

Noticing Christmas

I hope all of you can come to my house for a little Christmas party before Alix and Andy go out of town for Christmas December 23. I think now a Sunday brunch might be the thing, which basically suggests Sunday, December 16 or Sunday, December 9. (Unless Alix and Andy would like to come to my house for brunch on the day they go out of town if they have a late flight on the 23rd?) What works with your schedules, Tups?

Looks like boys on clean-up duty!

Although, I heard Andy has a horrible tooth thing -- Alix, will we be seeing him tonight?

Be forewarned, friends, depending on how diabolical I feel, I may post minutes from the supper itself!
